ABSTRACT = {The IoT encompasses objects, sensors, and everyday items not typically considered computers. IoT devices are subject to severe energy, memory, and computation power constraints. Employing NDN for the IoT is a recent approach to accommodate these issues. To gain a deeper insight into how different network parameters affect energy consumption, analyzing a range of parameters using hyperparameter optimization seems reasonable. The experiments from this work’s ndnSIM-based hyperparameter setup indicate that the data packet size has the most significant impact on energy consumption, followed by the caching scheme, caching strategy, and finally, the forwarding strategy. The energy footprint of these parameters is orders of magnitude apart. Surprisingly, the packet request sequence influences the caching parameters’ energy footprint more than the graph size and topology. Regarding energy consumption, the results indicate that data compression may be more relevant than expected, and caching may be more significant than the forwarding strategy. The framework for ndnSIM developed in this work can be used to simulate NDN networks more efficiently. Furthermore, the work presents a valuable basis for further research on the effect of specific parameter combinations not examined before.},

abstract = {The localization of nanobots in the human body is a crucial element to enable diagnostic ability. Current localization schemes for nanobots primarily rely on mathematical principles, but our proposed approach offers a different perspective. In this paper, we present a completely novel idea to locate nanobots within the human body by employing local pattern recognition based on unique fingerprints. We thoroughly investigate and assess various substances in the vicinity of nanobots to develop distinctive fingerprints for all major tissues. Among the candidates, we identify the human proteome as the most suitable option due to its high tissue specificity. Through our research, we determine unique combinations of protein-coding genes, ensuring exclusive localization for each specific body region. Each tissue's optimal fingerprint consists of only two protein-coding genes, which do not intersect with other tissues, further guaranteeing accurate localization. We propose the detection of these fingerprints by using DNA-based nanonetworks, enabling targeted drug delivery and facilitating the precise localization of nanobots or their measurements within the human body.},

ABSTRACT = {Due to increasing digitization, the amount of data in the Internet of Things (IoT) is constantly increasing. In order to be able to process queries efficiently, strategies must, therefore, be found to reduce the transmitted data as much as possible. SPARQL is particularly well-suited to the IoT environment because it can handle various data structures. Due to the flexibility of data structures, however, more data have to be joined again during processing. Therefore, a good join order is crucial as it significantly impacts the number of intermediate results. However, computing the best linking order is an NP-hard problem because the total number of possible linking orders increases exponentially with the number of inputs to be combined. In addition, there are different definitions of optimal join orders. Machine learning uses stochastic methods to achieve good results even with complex problems quickly. Other DBMSs also consider reducing network traffic but neglect the network topology. Network topology is crucial in IoT as devices are not evenly distributed. Therefore, we present new techniques for collaboration between routing, application, and machine learning. Our approach, which pushes the operators as close as possible to the data source, minimizes the produced network traffic by 10%. Additionally, the model can reduce the number of intermediate results by a factor of 100 in comparison to other state-of-the-art approaches.},

abstract = {Data transmission is one of the biggest energy consumers in low power networks. So, any application running in such environment must reduce the volume of communication caused by its presence. We want to deploy our database on a wireless sensor network. Therefore, we want to gain insights into the interoperability between routing and application in order to reduce communication costs. To do this, we propose our new benchmark framework in this contribution. Using this benchmark framework, we compare state-of-the-art database indexes and how much traffic they cause in a fully distributed environment. We believe that computing speed shouldn't be the only metric to compare databases with each other. If the database uses fewer resources, the actual application has more resources available.},

ABSTRACT={One of the biggest problems in modern medicine is diagnosing
deviations from an individual norm. Most diagnostic
methods rely on comparison with a population
average. However, this does not account for personal
variations. DNA-based nanonetworks offer an alternative
approach. This paper presents a novel DNA-based
nanonetwork architecture that measures several individual
health parameters and memorizes them. Based on
that, the network determines deviations from that norm

ABSTRACT={In many areas like medicine, there is a wide range of promising use cases
for nanostructures and nanonetworks.
While many machine models and suggestions for individual components have
been proposed in the past, the field lacks an enveloping modeling
framework.
Researchers rarely specify a machine model for their proposed solutions,
and as a result, partial solutions are often incompatible.
With a large set of devices, a partially observable stochastic environment,
and noisy observations, many components of such nanoscale systems can be
modeled as a decentralized, partially observable, Markov decision process
with special communication capabilities (DecPOMDPcom).
We extend and specify an existing set of component-based definitions to
allow for much more precise specifications and the generation of autonomous
programs for nanobots."

abstract = {One of the most important research issues in the field of nanonetworks is the problem of constructing real networks in practice. To build such networks, one needs to create the nano-devices themselves as well as a computing and a communication mechanism. We already have developed such a concept based on DNA building blocks (so called DNA tiles), which is able to generate all three mechanisms by self-construction, basically by providing a sufficiently large number of specific DNA building blocks. Such networks are Turing complete; however, as we demonstrate in this paper, the number of required building blocks to execute computations by simulating Turing machines is large. We will show in this paper that the number can be reduced by using specific, more efficient sets of building blocks for problems that can be modeled as boolean formulas. For specific mathematical operations like And or Add, even smaller solutions/message molecules can be created. This paper presents small message molecules for frequently requested mathematical problems. We present nanonetworks for the Thres and Add operations. Thres operations can be used to register if critical concentrations of disease markers have been reached. Add forms the basis for many advanced communication protocols. Furthermore, message molecules for Mult, Xor and Inc are conceptualized. The presented message molecules are smaller and less error prone compared to the tilesets that result from more generic approaches. It is therefore more likely that they can be employed in groundbreaking wet-lab experiments in the near future.}

abstract={Akyildiz et al. envisioned the use of nanonetworks as a new paradigm for computation and communication on a very small scale. We present a new approach to implement nanonetworks with molecular communication using tile-based self-assembly systems on the basis of DNA. In this model, the medium of communication is filled with DNA-based molecules. Furthermore, some nanobots are capable of creating or releasing said molecules. Once present, they can be detected by other nanobots and interpreted as messages. Some DNA-based molecule systems are capable of universal computation. We show that it is possible to construct systems, in which the evaluation to true of an arbitrary decision problem is a precondition for the assembly of a message molecule. We relocate computations from nanobots into message molecules, thereby revolutionizing the paradigm for computation in nanonetworks. This approach can be interpreted as computation inside the communication channel. We further present message molecules that only assemble if a marker has been detected at least k times, as a proof of concept.}

        abstract = {A big challenge in nanorobotics is the construction of nanoscale objects. DNA is a bio-compatible tool to reliably and constructively create objects at the nanoscale. A possible tool to build nano-sized structures are tile-based self-assembly systems on the basis of DNA. It is challenging and time-consuming to efficiently design blueprints for the desired objects. This paper presents basic algorithms for the creation of tilesets for nxnxn-cubes in the aTAM model. Only few publications focus on three-dimensional DNA crystals. Three-dimensional shapes are likely to be of more use in nanorobotics. We present three variations: hollow cubes, cube-grids and filled cubes. The paper also presents a basic algorithm to create arbitrary, finite, connected, three-dimensional and predefined shapes at temperature 1, as well as ideas for more efficient algorithms. Among those are algorithms for spheres, ellipsoids, red blood cells and other promising designs. The algorithms and tilesets are tested/verified using a software that has been developed for the purpose of verifying three-dimensional sets of tiletypes and was influenced by the tool ISU TAS. Others can use the simulator and the algorithms to quickly create sets of tiletypes for their desired nanostructures. A long learning process may thus be omitted.}

The aforementioned technologies are tile-based self-assembly systems  and quan"-tum-dot cellular automata. Both technologies are in theory capable of universal computation, while self-assembly systems may better be utilized for construction-purposes. Since the decrease in size of CMOS technology explained by Moores law approaches its lower bound due to quantum effects at the nanoscale, we find it necessary to analyze computational models like QCA to better incorporate future requirements. This paper explains the aforementioned mathematical models and defines a possible combination of both.}

 abstract = {Nano-communication is considered to become a major
building block for many novel applications in the health care and fitness
sector. Given the recent developments in the scope of nano machinery, coordination and control of these devices becomes the critical challenge to be solved.
In-Body Nano-Communication based on either molecular, acoustic, or RF radio communication in the terahertz band supports the exchange of messages between these in-body devices. Yet, the control and communication with external units is not yet fully understood. In this paper, we investigate the challenges and opportunities of connecting Body Area Networks and other external gateways with in-body nano-devices, paving the road towards more scalable and efficient Internet of Nano Things (IoNT) systems. We derive a novel network architecture supporting the resulting requirements and, most importantly, investigate options for the
simulation based performance evaluation of such novel concepts. Our study is concluded by a first look at the resulting security issues considering the high impact of potential misuse of the communication links.}

Current traffic monitoring and management approaches with stationary infrastructure lack flexibility with respect to system deployment and have difficulties with detecting unpredictable events (e.g., accidents). One goal of AutoNomos is the development of a distributed and selforganising traffic information and management system without a centralised infrastructure. Our system relies on a GPS-based navigation system and a wireless radio interface; vehicles can gather information about the current position on the road network and form a vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) to share information about traffic phenomena. In this article, we introduce Hovering Data Clouds (HDCs) as a tool to collect, aggregate and disseminate application-specific data. HDCs evolve in a self-organising manner at locations of relevant data in the system. Although their data is hosted on the nodes, HDCs exist independent of the individual carriers. While HDCs float between physical carriers, their corresponding HDC messages are disseminated in the network by a new effective transport protocol named AutoCast, designed according to Organic Computing paradigms. Finally, we demonstrate that HDCs detect traffic phenomena reliably and propagate them robustly within the network.",

biology have been proposed to disseminate or transfer data in mobile or
static ad-hoc networks. Many of them are designed for usage in wireless
sensor networks or vehicular ad-hoc networks. Recently, we have
developed and designed a general purpose data dissemination protocol
called AutoCast in this field that we evaluated in detail by
simulations. When we started to use AutoCast in real applications, we
found out that the description of AutoCast is incomplete, as we provided
the algorithms of AutoCast in details but did neither provide nor
describe a suitable Application Programming Interface (API) and AutoCast
was closely coupled to the application. The focus of this article is
twofold. First, we propose an appropriate API to encapsulate data
dissemination protocols like AutoCast and we specify the service
interface of AutoCast in detail. This API can serve as a reference model
for other nature and biologically inspired data dissemination approaches
and applications. Second, we evaluate two applications based on our API
with AutoCast in the field of wireless sensor networks and vehicular
ad-hoc networks to illustrate the usage of the API and demonstrate the
flexibility of this approach.",

  abstract = {Today's Internet is approaching architectural limits that are set up by its legacy architecture. It is based on technologies and algorithms that were developed about 30 years ago. Thus intensive research is done in the field of new protocols and algorithms fulfilling the needs of the Future Internet. We believe that wireless sensor networks (WSNs), sensor-equipped devices such as cellphones and other embedded systems will have a vital part in this context, providing a way to obtain information about the real world. All of these new devices will produce a huge amount of data by sensing and interacting with their environment. At present, complex low-level sensor node programming and algorithm knowledge is necessary to access sensor data, and only a few mature techniques exist to integrate heterogeneous WSNs with the Internet. The goal of Real-World G-Lab, which is part of the German-Lab (G-Lab) project, is to overcome these obstacles by working on the different levels of protocols, services and applications. We will enable developers to write applications that rely on sensor data input, without knowledge of the underlying hardware platform and the network communication algorithms. This implies that sensors are able to participate in the Future Internet as peer hosts. This enables new fields of applications but likewise opens a set of new challenges in the context of efficient request processing by WSNs. Efficiency here means the optimization of query-latency, energy efficiency and general service-guarantees regarding the access to sensor nodes. Beyond this we need the ability to scale to a large amount of requests from the Internet while maintaining low latencies. We will verify our concepts and applications inside the controllable environment of the G-LAB research network, by adding several outdoor WSN deployments to the experimental facility of the G-LAB project. In summary, Real-World G-LAB will contribute to the integration of resource-constrained (wireless) sensor devices into the Future Internet by investigating several key challenges, ranging from low-level energy efficiency to improved high-level application development.},

  abstract = {It is envisioned that in the future, all kinds of devices ranging
	from resource-constraint wireless sensor nodes to powerful server-class
	computers will interact to form an Internet of Things (IoT). In such
	a setting, tiny devices will extend the Internet to the physical
	world and allow for a completely new class of applications. However,
	until today, no widespread deployment of such IoT applications can
	be observed. Major challenges to master issues of embedded programming,
	massive distribution, resource constraints, heterogeneity, and seamless
	integration with traditional Internet technologies. Orchestrating
	such a number of different devices to form an application can be
	arbitrarily complex. In the Internet and especially in Enterprise
	IT, the concept of Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) has been
	applied successfully to address this orchestration problem. However,
	the technologies used to realize SOAs (such as Web Services, HTTP,
	XML, or BPEL) are to heavyweight to be used in resource-constraint
	networks. In this paper, we present a comprehensive, Web Service-compliant
	approach to use SOA technologies in WSNs. Our approach comprises
	self-description of sensor nodes, a light-weight Web Service transport
	protocol (called Lean Transport Protocol, LTP), an approach for the
	model-based programming of sensor nodes, and a solution for the integration
	with the Internet. We present an exhaustive simulation showing the
	first-rate performance of the approach.},
