Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a significant global health problem that affects individuals' functional capacity and quality of life. It is a major risk factor for several diseases and contributes to higher mortality rates. In Costa Rica, the prevalence of diabetes has increased to 12.8% of the adult population. Moreover, the standardized diabetes mortality rate incresed to 26.3 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Costa Rica is a challenge for the public health system. The Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS), which covers 90% of the population, faces limitations in providing comprehensive care, including limited access to medications and inadequate support in nutrition, physical activity, and psychological care. However, Costa Rica has made strides in digital health with the Unified Digital Health Record (EDUS) system. A 2015 study highlighted the need for a tailored mobile application to support diabetes management in Costa Rica. However, these recommendations have not been implemented yet.

Therefore, this thesis aims to develop a high-fidelity prototype app that addresses these challenges. The prototype is specifically tailored to the cultural and health context of Costa Rica.
